Security Report: Sept. 12 – Sept. 18, 2012

Wednesday, Sept. 12

10:19 p.m. At approximately 10:19 p.m., a student reported that an unknown subject entered his room in East Hall. He appeared to have been going room to room on the second floor, taking small electronic devices. After conversing with the male student, the suspect became confrontational and a scuffle ensued. The suspect dropped the stolen items and an unloaded BB gun before fleeing on foot. The suspect was described as a young white male, red hair, tan with freckles, spoke with a southern accent, wearing a yellow shirt, and carrying a black backpack. The Oberlin Police later made an arrest and the individual is in custody in the Lorain County Correctional Facility as of Sept. 14.

Thursday, Sept. 13

1:02 a.m. Officers and Oberlin Police responded to a report of several screens torn from windows at Saunders and rooms possibly entered. The only items reported missing were laundry money. The incident is under investigation. An emergency work order was filed for repair of the screens.

11:50 a.m. Officers responded to assist a student having an asthma attack at a village house on North Pleasant Street. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Medical Center by ambulance.

4:17 p.m. A student reported the theft of his shorts, which contained his phone, wallet and keys, from the Heisman Field House locker room. The wallet contained two credit cards, a driver’s license, OCID and $10.

Friday, Sept.14

1:30 a.m. Officers were requested to assist a student who was possibly having an allergic reaction at Fairchild Hall. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Medical Center for treatment.

11:30 a.m. Staff reported several NCAA and Oberlin College Athletic banners missing from the soccer and football field areas. Sizes ranged from 2 feet by 3 feet to 3 feet by 5 feet; values were unknown at the time of report.

Saturday, Sept. 15

8:25 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a student stuck in the elevator at Firelands due to a power outage. The Oberlin Fire Department also responded and assisted the student in exiting the elevator.

10 a.m. Officers and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Hall Auditorium. An activated pull station in the workshop dock was the cause of the alarm. No one was located in the area.

Sunday, Sept. 16

12:27 a.m. Officers responded to an intoxicated male attempting to gain entry to the ’Sco. The individual, who is not affiliated with Oberlin College, was instructed to leave and complied.

1:30 p.m. A student reported the theft of two auxiliary iPod cables from her vehicle sometime between Monday, Sept. 3 and Thursday, Sept. 6. The total value of the missing items is $40.

3:11 p.m. A resident of village housing on Elm Street reported a large brown couch missing from the front porch. Value was estimated at between $50 and $100.

6:50 p.m. Officers and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the kitchenette at Asia House. The cause of the alarm was smoke from hot oil.

9:38 p.m. A student reported the theft of her wallet while attending an off-campus party earlier in the morning. The wallet was black faux leather and contained high school and former college ID, stamps, health card, gift card, debit and credit cards and approximately $15 in cash. The debit and credit cards were canceled.

Monday, Sept. 17

1:20 p.m. Custodial staff reported a cracked glass door at an Elm Street apartment. The glass was taped until repairs can be made.

1:35 p.m. A member of the facilities staff reported a grill located on the roof area of the second floor, above the doorway, at an Elm Street apartment. Res Ed was notified to remove it.

6:55 p.m. Officers responded to the South Professor Street area to assist a student who had fallen off a bicycle. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Hospital for treatment of an injured hand and scrapes.

7:20 p.m. A student reported the theft of her white iPhone 4S, with an approximate value of $200, while watching a volleyball game at Philips Gym. Service to the phone was disconnected.

Tuesday, Sept. 18

2:26 p.m. A student reported the theft of her bicycle from the east side of Noah Hall. The bike is a silver and purple women’s 21-speed Raleigh mountain bike. Its value is estimated at $200.

9:31 p.m. Officers responded to a call from East Hall to assist a student who injured his ankle playing basketball. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Hospital for treatment.
