Last week, the Oberlin men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams partnered with the Multicultural Resource Center to host Love Always Wins, a Pride event. Team members wore rainbow shoelaces at their games against the Allegheny College Gators in Philips gym. Rainbow sunglasses were also sold at the venue for $1, with all proceeds going to the Trevor Project, a non-profit organization focused on suicide prevention for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, the Athletics department recognized all faculty and staff members in attendance.
“It was great,” said College third-year and men’s basketball player Jordan Armstrong. “I think that both teams here really are proud of our identity as Oberlin students and the environment that we foster here for all students, being proud of all genders, sexualities, and ways of life. It felt really good for me and all of my teammates to be able to compete as proud athletes.”
These games came off the heels of an important statement made by former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade, who announced that his 12-year-old daughter, Zaya, came out as transgender. The impact of Wade’s statement is covered on page 16 of this issue (“The Wade Family’s Positive Influence”).
Both teams are approaching the end of their seasons and will play their final home games Saturday, Feb. 22. See the women’s and men’s teams compete at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

This past Saturday, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams ushered in the holiday season with their annual Holiday Hoops double-header, which featured back-to-back face-offs against the Tigers of DePauw University. College second-year Sammy Spanier, pictured above, led the Yeowomen’s effort with 15 points, but both men’s and women’s teams left with losses. However, spirits remained high due to a number of holiday-themed festivities, such as cookie decorating, an ugly sweater picture with Oberlin’s albino squirrel mascot Yeobie, gift wrapping for Helping Hands Donations, and knockout games during halftime.

“Being able to play in such an exciting and fun atmosphere is always one of the best experiences a student-athlete can have,” College fourth-year and women’s basketball player Cheyanne Arthur said.

A Thursday morning announcement revealed that six Oberlin varsity football players earned All-NCAC Honors for their exceptional independent performances this past season. Among them, fourth-year linebacker Von Wooding and second-year tight end Brandon Davies were named All-NCAC second team. Fourth-year defensive players Devin White, Jabree Hason, and Justin Godfrey and third-year offensive lineman Chandler Laird earned All-NCAC honorable mentions.
Next year, the team will lose the combined efforts of Wooding, White, Hason, and Godfrey, but Davies and Laird will return to the field. Davies viewed the All-NCAC Honors as a good omen when looking ahead at next year’s season, especially considering the team won only a single game this year.
“It was really encouraging since our season didn’t go as planned,” said Davies. “I feel like it can only get better from here on out and hopefully we can improve as a team [and I can improve] my own performance.

Outscoring their competitors by a whopping 171–68 margin, the Oberlin women’s swimming and diving team took away its first win of the season against Tiffin University, an NCAA Division II school. The Yeowomen snagged first in 13 of the 16 events, with impressive performances by team newcomers and veterans alike. College first-year Tara Draper clinched first-place in two freestyle events, while College third-year and diver Lauren Young won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

“I think I’ve made a lot of progress this year, and it feels great to win both boards,” said Young.

“I’m really just proud that I got to contribute to the team’s first win of the season. Everyone worked super hard for that win and [has] been working incredibly hard all season.”

Prior to facing Oberlin, the Tiffin women’s swim and dive team lost to the University of Notre Dame, a Division I team, 142–78 — a comparatively closer margin than their final score against Oberlin.

Last Saturday, field hockey alumni from the class of 2019 returned to Oberlin to catch the final game of the season and celebrate this year’s four College fourth- years Fatima Escalera, Hayley Segall, Libby Royer, and Luisa McGarvey. Their return to Oberlin served as a reflection of the team’s bond — one that exists between different generations of Oberlin varsity field hockey players, even beyond graduation.

In an article published in the Review over a year ago that detailed the unique friendships developed within the field hockey team, former captain Emma Broun, OC ’19, who attended this year’s senior commemoration and is pictured above in the middle, described the importance of team bonding over winning — a value that this year’s group of fourth- years has continued to cultivate.

“The general culture [of the field hockey team] is very focused on kindness, care, and love,” Broun said in 2018. “Nobody told our team that we have to love each other and spend time together off the field — we just do. Of course, we all have the common goal of playing good field hockey and winning games, but basing an entire two months of our lives on beating other teams won’t necessarily create the kind of environment we all want to live in. Instead, the common goal we are encouraged to pursue by our coaches [and each other] is being kind to others.”

After weeks of public discourse and polls, six names have been proposed for Oberlin’s new albino squirrel mascot: Stevie, Albie, Finney, Yeobie, Apollo, and Macademia. While there is virtue in all of the potential names — especially “Macademia” which, if it weren’t for the already-confusing spelling of Macadamia, many could see as a play on the word “academia” and the strand of nut that is typically consumed by squirrels — the Review’s Sports section would like to publicly endorse the name “Yeobie.” We believe that it represents a bridge between the two sides of campus, those that identify with “Yeo” — typically athletes, hence the “Go, yeo” athletics cheer — and those non-athletes who identify as “Obies.” We think that this unique unification could be something that all students can rally behind.

Oberlin community members gathered together last Thursday to inaugurate the new George A. Abram Pavilion on South Main Street. Speakers and family members at the memorial inauguration cut the ribbon together, signifying the opening of the renamed pavilion. Abram, who recently passed, made many lasting contributions to the town of Oberlin and the College. He established the Oberlin Chapter of the Boys & Girls Club, consulted with Oberlin College to create their Affirmative Action Plan, served as a longtime public-address announcer at College varsity sports games, and much more.

The MindSpa in Shanks Health and Wellness Center, located in room H111, was opened to students last month. The MindSpa, a room filled with various resources for students to unwind and take a step back from their hectic lives, is part of the new expansion added to Philips gym this past year. Available resources include stress balls, couches with fluffy pillows, guided meditations, nature sounds, a rakeable Zen garden, books on mindfulness, and much more. In order to access the space, the YeoFit website allows any student to reserve a 30-minute session. This space will be especially helpful as students approach final exam week and stress levels are high.

Last Friday, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee hosted its first-ever Dive-Into Spring Semester event in Carr Pool. With an entry fee of $2, Oberlin students and community members alike were able to jump into the pool while watching the on-theme feature film of the night, Finding Nemo. Popcorn and floaties were provided, allowing attendees to snack and drift through the water, turning Carr Pool into an aquatic drive-in movie theater. The SAAC’s mission is to create a strong relationship between the Oberlin community and varsity athletics through sponsored projects and events such as this one.

Students practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures on both infant and adult CPR manikins during a free University Hospital instructional course hosted by the Oberlin Sports Medicine Department last Monday. Oberlin students, faculty, and staff arrived at the Knowlton Athletics Complex Social Space at 6 p.m. to learn various life-saving techniques to prepare for a potential emergency situation. At least two members of each Oberlin club-sport team were encouraged to attend, along with other organizations on campus that openly recommended the training. The event was attended by over 70 people — many more than the expected 40.

The Oberlin women’s volleyball team held a fundraiser Thursday, making individualized $25 candy bags for Valentine’s Day and allowing Oberlin students to surprise their loved ones with a hand-delivered holiday treat. The idea was inspired by the Oberlin women’s softball team, which has been making and delivering Halloween gift bags as a fundraiser for the past three years. The volleyball team’s gift bag featured an assortment of sweets, including Skittles and chocolate. Throughout the day, members of the team ran across campus, knocking on dorm room doors to bestow the Valentines on their excited recipients.
