September 21, 2018

When College sophomore Michael Candelori arrived at Oberlin last fall, his intentions were to focus on soccer and graduate with a degree in Economics. After three classes in economics and one in the math department, Candelori decided to shift gears. The Vienna, VA, native now plans on declaring a double-major in Cinema Studies and Theater. His interest in film began in high school when he had the opportunity to shadow a friend’s dad who was working on a documentary that ended up on Net...

Good Recruiting Leads to Great Success for Cross Country, Track and Field

September 14, 2018

It was four months ago that Lilah Drafts-Johnson, OC ’18, clutched her first-place trophy while being mobbed by teammates and coaches. She had just run the 10th fastest 400-meter hurdle time in the event’s history at the NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and could finally call herself a national champion — a promise she made to herself three years earlier. Two days later, it was her Oberlin College diploma that she held with pride. After four year...

In The Locker Room with Jabari and Malachi Clemons, Teammates and Brothers

September 14, 2018

Growing up, brothers Jabari and Malachi Clemons did everything together, from playing video games in the bedroom to running around the track while their dad timed them. Despite their closeness, neither one expected to be on the same college campus, let alone the same college football team. Jabari, a College senior, is the starting wide receiver after missing his entire junior season due to an ACL injury. Malachi, a second-year, was voted Male Newcomer of the Year by his peers at the 2018 Obie...

Field Hockey Maximizes Holistic College Experience

Field Hockey Head Coach Tiffany Saunders had no idea she wouldn’t be returning to Radford University at the conclusion of her fifth season as the lead assistant coach of the Highlanders. The news came in February 2014 that the school would be cutting its field hockey program, leaving Saunders shocked and uncertain about where she would end up next. Saunders had spent four years as a starter for the Highlanders before beginning her coaching career, and Radford, VA, was home. When Sau...

New Building Promises Better Access to Wellness in Academic Year

September 7, 2018

Delta Lodge Director of Athletics and Physical Education Natalie Winkelfoos beamed with pride last Tuesday as students and coaches gathered to celebrate the opening of the Pat ’63 & Merrill ’61 Shanks Health and Wellness Center. Perhaps she could hear the turning of wheels and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Isaiah Cavaco’s music blasting through the speakers in the new spinning room, or maybe it was the thought of Associate Director of Leadership Annual Giving Lisa Thuer recitin...

Newton, Drafts-Johnson Lead Team to NCAC Championship

May 11, 2018

Many words have been used to describe the women’s track and field team: victorious, dominant, and inspiring are a few key examples. One word that is not in the team’s vocabulary is complacent. The team won its second straight North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship with a total of 228 points Saturday, a few months after winning its second consecutive Indoor Championship. A number of Yeowomen had career-best performances during the two-day contest. Head Coach Ray Appenheimer, who was ...

Hammon Should Exemplify Fight Against Sexism in Sports

Alexis Dill, Sports Editor

May 11, 2018

As a girl who grew up playing sports and dreaming of one day becoming a sports journalist, I have always been supported and encouraged by the men in my life. However, many of the women I look up to have been victims of sexism at one point or another throughout their careers. Fox NFL Sportscaster Erin Andrews was labeled “Sideline Barbie” by sports blogs. Serena Williams, one of the best tennis players ever, was told by former tennis star John McEnroe that if she played the men’s circuit, she’d be “ranked 700th in the world.” When the Oberlin College Athletic Department brought Justine Siegal to campus in November 2016, I made sure I was there. Siegal became the first female coach in Major League Baseball ...

LeBron James Deserves Reverence, Even If He Leaves Cleveland

Alexis Dill, Sports Editor

May 4, 2018

Quicken Loans Arena erupted last Wednesday as LeBron James sank a game-winning, buzzer-beating three-pointer over the outstretched arm of Indiana’s Thaddeus Young to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a 3–2 lead going into Game 6 of the series. After chest-bumping Cedi Osman and receiving embraces from his other teammates, James jumped onto the scoring table and pounded his chest as he looked into the sea of Cavs fans. Even if the Toronto Raptors eliminate my hometown team in this upcoming series, I’m grateful that one day I’ll be able to tell my kids I watched the greatest player to ever grace the NBA hardwood and was blessed with celebratory moments like this. As the end of the NBA season looms, James will have t...

MLB Should Expand Influence in Latin America

Alexis Dill, Sports Editor

April 27, 2018

One month into the 2018 Major League Baseball season, fans have had plenty to marvel at. Last week, they saw Oakland Athletics left-hander Sean Manaea no-hit the Boston Red Sox, the team that currently boasts the best record in the league at 19–5. They watched Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout lift his 10th home run of the season over the fence Tuesday, making him the first player this season to enter double digits in the category. However, nothing made fans cheer louder than when Cleveland’s shortstop, Francisco Lindor, hit a two-run bomb in an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins in Puerto Rico last week. Lindor, who was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, is considered a hero there. As he walked past h...

In The Locker Room with John Sutherland and Jay Messina, Club Golf Founders

April 27, 2018

Just before College senior John Sutherland arrived at Oberlin College in fall 2014, the College dropped its golf program due to a lack of participation. However, when Sutherland was a sophomore, lacrosse teammate Jay Messina, then a first-year, joined him on the links. The two founded club golf and have recruited others to join in the years since. The team currently is made up of over 20 students, many of whom come from the varsity lacrosse and baseball teams — but the team is also made up of s...
