Hello Safety, Goodbye Security: An Unexpected Budget Cut

Like any first-year reluctant to abandon the air-conditioned luxury of their home, Campus Safety — formerly known as Safety and Security — has certainly been dragging its feet on its move to Dascomb Hall. While no one quite knows when they will move into Fourth Meal’s decrepit shell, even less is known about its sudden rebranding. Why the switch from Safety and Security to merely Campus Safety? Is it because now, in the midst of a budget crisis, “security” is the latest tenant to be sacrificed at the deficit’s jeweled altar? And what acronym can we possibly revere now, with the snappy “S-’n’-S” struck down alongside it? Students living in South Hall have been some of the first to feel the effect...

Thursday, May 3, 2018 10:30 a.m. Service Building staff reported that the cable lock to the parts cage had been cut by an unknown person(s). Nothing is missing at this time, and the person(s) did not gain entry to the cage. 6:20 p.m. A student reported the theft of their unlocked bicycle from the bicycle rack on the west side of the King Building. 8:36 p.m. Wilder Hall staff reported a suspicious individual who appeared to be under the influence and was acting aggressively. A work order was filed for removal. 2:00 p.m. A construction employee reported non-offensive graffiti on the Hall Auditorium Annex. An unknown person(s) spray-painted the building and adaptable walls. Friday, April 27, 2018 1:15 a.m. Safety and Security officers reported an individual lying in the middle of Woodland Street in front of the Science Center. Students returning to campus this fall should expect to see a new Office of Safety and Security and new Health Services Center housed in Dascomb Hall. With the closing of the dining hall, renovations to the space are expected to begin after commencement. Last year, Safety and Security officers expressed a need for a new space.
