Whether it be newfound confidence, a scent in the air, or the change of season, the start of the school year always comes with a new set of standards after which to model your wardrobe. With an unusually cool forecast this first week of class, fall trends might be coming sooner rather than later. Luckily for Obies who love style, this weather is both widening the window where outfits can have layers and dispelling the need to change in the middle of the day. So, what do students think will be trendy this semester?
These interviews have been edited for length and clarity.
Ezra Mindel Rozin, College first-year:
Having random stuff around and carrying everything in your bag and eating an apple outside. Also, an apple is an accessory. Eating an apple outside — I think that’s the same vibe as smoking a cigarette, and I will not elaborate. I also think reading should be in, and not performative reading, but actually reading.
Emi Kawamura, College third-year:
I feel like everyone is all of a sudden going to get finger tattoos. I also want one. I think messenger bags with matcha lattes from Azzie’s is also going to be a huge trend, and the performative man vibe is going to explode on campus.
Ryan Hoff, College third-year:
I think condiments are a latent part of our culture, and they’re often unappreciated. I’ve been seeing a lot of condiment shirts, and I think they’re going to have a breakthrough. I think this fall, when it starts getting colder outside, people are going to turn to their sauces. They’re going to turn to their seasonings. They’re going to turn to anything that they add to their food — to their life — to add a little bit of flavor. What I really want to see is a fashionable sauce bottle. That side backpack pocket where a water bottle might be, I’m hoping to see sriracha, ketchup, or a jar of peanut butter.
Theo Knauss, College second-year:
I think people are going to start sprinting everywhere instead of walking. It’s better and faster.
William Tuttle, College fourth-year:
There’s been a push for a bigger party culture on campus, and I think this is the semester where it’s going to happen. I have faith.
Ozzie Frazier, College third-year:
I hope that AVI Foodsystems starts doing free ice cream all the time because I don’t think we have enough ice cream on this campus. And a trend that I think is going to happen is people wearing sunglasses inside. I’m setting the trend, and that’s because I have a concussion. People will think I’m doing it because it’s cool, and then other people will also do it.
Clara Kendrick, College third-year:
What I hope will happen is French tips. I want everybody to have French tips. I think that would be really cute. Even if you have short nails, you can still do French tips. This is already a trend, but I think Birkenstocks with the open back are going to trend even more.
Ursula Gillingham-Ryan, College first-year:
I support wearing shorts and skirts in cold weather, maybe complimented with a tall boot and tall socks. I support tall socks and sneakers. I also support old sweaters and jeans, or funky scarves and hats. I support everything.
Anna Yeh, College third-year:
The trend that I think will happen this fall has already started emerging, but it will transition into more of a fall theme. It’s those wedge boots — they’re tan and have the fringe on them. Those have been around, but I think they’ll make a comeback this fall.
Jayden White, College first-year:
I think it’s going to be cable knit sweaters — white or beige cable knit sweaters. Also, I’m hoping for funky fleece tights because they’re fun to look at.
Max Sherman, College first-year:
I think we’re going to see people making leaf piles — jumping in leaf piles, playing around, having fun, and going back to their childish roots. I’m also thinking cardigans. I busted out mine today. And perhaps hibernation?
Cash Stone, College second-year:
I think that people are going to circle so far around in hating Labubus that they’re going to start wearing them, ironically, and then it’s going to become unironic.
Paloma Szyfer, College second-year:
A fall trend that I want to happen is brown colors. I think it’s going to come into fashion and people are going to try more brown makeup looks.
