In the shadow of Cleveland, Ohio, tucked away in the cornfields, lies a small town and one of the nation’s premier academic institutions, Oberlin College. But you already knew that. What you didn’t know was that the cross country and track and field teams at this small liberal arts college refused to let a pandemic stop them. In the shadow of Cleveland, Ohio, tucked away in the cornfields, lies a small town and one of the nation’s premier academic institutions, Oberlin College. But you already knew that. What you didn’t know was that this small liberal arts college, known more for its progressive history than its athletic history, is where some of the best athletic teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference train and compete. Among them are the Yeomen and Yeowomen of the cross country and track and field teams....

November 22, 2019

College first-year Lilly Crook walked into Perlick Commons on Tuesday morning wearing a long, flowing yellow dress with a floral pattern on it. She laughed and said, “Marija will probably be late.” A couple minutes later, she laughed again. College fourth-year Marija, her older sister and cross country teammate, entered the room wearing a long and flowy red dress with a floral pattern on it.  “We don’t usually do this,” Lilly said. “Everyone always says we look so alike, but...

Women’s Cross Country Win Rumble: An Annual Tradition of Determination

November 1, 2019

On the morning of the Inter-Regional Rumble, members of the Oberlin women’s cross country team prepared by putting on glitter and writing words of encouragement on each other with colorful pens. Coaches, friends, Oberlin alumni, and family were on the sidelines cheering for their teams as athletes lined up at the starting line, a sea of multicultural uniforms. When the gun went off, the sound of pounding feet filled the air as hundreds of cross country athletes raced around the 6- and 8-kilomet...

Despite the departure of national champions Lilah Drafts-Johnson and Monique Newton, both OC ’18, the women’s track and field team proved they are no less dominant as they secured their third straight Indoor Track and Field North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Saturday.

Women’s Track and Field Wins Third Straight NCAC Title

March 8, 2019

For the past few years, Oberlin track and field stars like Lilah Drafts-Johnson, Ana Richardson, and Monique Newton — all OC ’18 — have been household names in the Oberlin athletic community. After two consecutive years of Indoor Track and Field North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, with individual accolades and accomplishments to match, it may seem unclear to outsiders whether or not the track and field team could continue this streak of success without their stars. Non...

Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said that he was pleasantly surprised with his athletes’ performances considering the competition they faced. “It was really cool to get the opportunity [to compete] against teams we never ever see,” Appenheimer said. “There’s always stuff to work on,...
