Israel Launches Ground Attack in Gaza Against Hamas

Israel has launched a ground attack against Hamas. This comes after being attacked by the militant organization Oct. 7 and declaring war in response. After prior aerial bombardments and two targeted raids, Israel has now sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip while continuing airstrikes. Attacks have been carried out against Hamas operatives.

Ukrainian Forces Adapt  Tactics as Winter Approaches

Ukrainian forces are adapting their tactics in response to changing weather and increased cold, which will be a significant obstacle to their military. This will be their second winter of combat since Russia invaded in February 2022. To prevent further loss of Ukrainian soldiers to the region’s harsh winter conditions, changes will be made, such as scaling back the size of the army. Forces will be sent in smaller groups into Russian-occupied areas, as this poses less of a risk than a large group attack. More air and sea attacks are also predicted as ground attacks become more difficult. This comes as Russia is reportedly planning to further attack Ukraine and its energy infrastructure.

Discovery in France Could Help Combat Climate Change

When two scientists in France were searching for fossil fuels in the northeastern part of the country, they discovered a high concentration of hydrogen beneath the earth’s surface. Natural deposits like these exist throughout the world, but few have ever been found, making this discovery exciting as a potentially untapped clean energy source. Hydrogen is abundant, but it mostly exists on Earth in chemical compounds, and making it usable requires an energy-intensive process. These reservoirs of hydrogen would be easier to use, and since hydrogen produces more energy than most other green energy sources, it would be beneficial for high-energy processes such as manufacturing and steel production.

China Building New Space Station

China is currently building a new space station named Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace, to rival NASA’s International Space Station. This comes as the ISS approaches the end of its useful life; it is predicted to be decommissioned in 2030. China’s new space station will be expected to last around 15 years, have the capacity to hold three astronauts and will be smaller than the ISS. Six new modules have recently been added during its construction. The space station is part of China’s advancement in space technology and effort to become “a major space power.”
