Oberlin Athletics Compete over Winter Term

While most of us were away for Winter Term, many athletes and teams — such as the indoor track, swim, and basketball teams — had to stay on campus to continue their seasons.

Indoor Track and Field
The indoor track team had four events: two at The College of Wooster, one at Baldwin Wallace University, and one at Oberlin. At the Wooster Invitational, both the men’s and women’s teams fin- ished in fourth place. During the 4×400-meter relay, the Yeomen broke a school record, with third- years Sam Fechner and Kam- bi Obioha and first-years Oliver Briger and Armand Andry finish- ing with a time of 3 minutes, 21 seconds. On the women’s team, second-year Ryley Steggall placed first in the women’s 200-meter sprint and broke a personal re- cord with a time of 27.03.
The second Wooster event saw another wave of success with a second school record broken, this time in the men’s 4×200-meter re- lay. The group of Fechner, Briger, Andry, and third-year Reese Hy- att finished in 1:31.01, which broke the previous record of 1:31.26.
At their next meet, the Dr. Tar- aschke Team Challenge at Bald- win Wallace University, the Yeo- men finished third with 51 points and the Yeowomen finished in fifth with 31.5 points. Walter
Will Bousquette maintains possession of the ball.
Moak won the men’s 3000-meter race in 8:42.91, which set a new meet record and beat his person- al best by 16 seconds. Third-year Cole Fuller finished first with 51.86, followed by second-year Treyce Wood in third place in 52.42. Second-year Ella Wozek ran in 1:04.11, her personal best.
The final meet of Winter Term was held at Oberlin, where Obio- ha, Fechner, Andry, and Fuller reset the school record in the 4×400 with a time of 3:20.35. In the women’s weight throw, fourth-year Abby Cannon took first place with a heave of 53–02.5 — 16.22 meters — the season’s best throw.
The track team continues their season this Friday, Feb. 9 at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, MI.
Swim and Dive
The swim and dive team got off to a rocky start against Kenyon Col- lege and Cleveland State Universi- ty at Kenyon. However, they were able to recover by beating Ohio Wesleyan University the follow- ing day. The Yeowomen beat the Battling Bishops 182–92; the Yeo- men followed the success by win- ning 222–56.
After a meet against Allegheny College was contested virtually due to weather conditions, the swim team went up against Case Western University, who are the #13 and #15 teams in the nation. The teams fell against the Spar- tans, but the highlight of the eve-

ning was third-year Myles Felt breaking a school record in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 53.80. The record was pre- viously held by Micheal Lin, OC ’20, who set a time of 54.51 in 2017.
The team capped off the season with an outstanding invitational against The College of Wooster and Hiram College, beating them both for the first time in years. The Yeowomen beat the Terriers 205–41, but came up short against Wooster 176.5–78.5. The Yeomen completed the sweep by defeating the Terriers 207–43 and Wooster 141–115.
Some highlights from the event included a first victory for first-year Faye Huffman, who scored 178.50 in the 1-meter div- ing event. Second-year teammate Winifred Wood came in second place with 169.55. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team made up of second-year Nyrobi Whit- field, third-year Elinor Frost, and fourth-years Audrey Weber and Hannah Hale finished in second place with a time of 1:57.01. The Yeomen’s team of Felt, third-years Isaac Viviano and Erik Fendorf, and second-year Daniel Bocsi fin- ished first in 1:35.92. Second-year Miguel Siwady and first-year Chahine Said finished in first and second place in the 200-yard free- style, with times of 1:47.69 and 1:47.99, respectively. In the same event, Hale took second place with a time of 2:01.42. The event’s results earned Felt NCAC Athlete of the Week Honors.

The swim and dive team is clos- ing in on the end of a season with many broken records. Their next event is the NCAC Champion- ships hosted by Denison Univer- sity from Feb. 14–17.
Women’s Basketball
Following Winter Term play, the Yeowomen have a record of 15–7. The team started the new year with a win against Hiram College, beating them 66–61. Fourth-year Alyson Jefferson scored 16 points, closely followed by second-year Ellie Pollock-Bal- lard with 15 points. Another two teammates also scored double digits: third-year Camille Zinaich scored 15 points, and fourth-year Gina Lomard scored 14.
One of their most significant wins was against Kenyon College on Jan. 31 when the Yeowom- en defeated the Owls 69–38. The team managed to build a lead when they came out after half- time, scoring 28 points in the third quarter compared to only 9 from Kenyon. Teammates Jef- ferson and Zinaich combined for 33 points with 17 and 16 respec- tively. Zinaich added 10 rebounds to the 16 points. The third team- mate to make double digits was second-year Anora Lee with 10 points.
Over Winter Term, first-year Krystal Montas was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time, thanks to numerous great perfor- mances.

To kick off the second semes- ter, the women’s basketball team won their game against The Col- lege of Wooster on Feb. 7, beating them 51–41. The team continues their season with their last two home games against DePauw University and Wittenberg Uni- versity. The games will be on Feb. 10 and Feb. 14, respectively, at Philips gym.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team started their Winter Term games against Penn State Altoona with a 73–54 win. First-year Robert Millard led the team with 16 points, fol- lowed by fellow first-year JJ Gray with 13 points. The Yeomen won their first game of the new year against Hiram, 81–59. The Yeo- men finished the first half down 39–32, but a 49 point barrage and defensive lockdown put the game well out of Hiram’s reach. Gray scored 14 points and third- year Andrew Gannon scored 20 points. The Yeomen followed the game with another two consecu- tive wins against Ohio Wesleyan University and Kenyon College.
In what was arguably their most notable win of the season, the team beat Denison University 75- 68 and snapped a seven-game los- ing streak against them.
The men’s basketball team re- cently lost against The College of Wooster on Feb. 7. Their last home game of the regular sea- son is Saturday, Feb. 10 in Philips gym.
