To the Editors:
I was pleased to read The Review’s Feb. 14 news article (“Oberlin’s Revolutionary AJLC to be Reimagined,” The Oberlin Review, Feb. 14, 2025). The article outlines anticipated updates to the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. The technology in the building that was once cutting-edge has become outdated, and it’s time to become even more sustainable. John Petersen, OC ’88, director of the Environmental Studies and Sciences program, stated that the AJLC is “an integrated component of the curriculum … It, itself, is educational.”
Like the AJLC, the Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law by former President Joe Biden in 2022, teaches us how to adapt in the face of climate change. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the IRA curbs greenhouse gas emissions, which could have costly consequences. High levels of air pollution can have a negative ripple effect. For example, it can create soaring medical bills, leading to decreased productivity, lower output, and higher consumer prices. By encouraging sustainable energy like wind and solar, the Inflation Reduction Act benefits the economy, and investment in clean energy avoids the volatility of the global oil market prices.
I call on Representative Bob Latta, Senator Bernie Moreno, and Senator Jon Husted to oppose any attempts to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. This legislation is an essential part of building economic resilience. Additionally, it safeguards the health of American citizens and envisions a sustainable future.
