The Opinions section is calling for writers! As students, between the rush of assignments, club meetings, hangouts, and more, four (or five) years on campus rush by in the blink of an eye. If you’re wondering how to make a meaningful impact that might outlast your physical presence, you should consider writing for the Opinions section.
The Opinions section features multifaceted discussions about topics that are important to our community. We publish articles that provoke connections between seemingly disparate areas, make calls to action for positive changes to our campus, and leave enduring messages that leave readers with valuable and enduring perspectives.
Writing bi-weekly as a columnist gives writers an opportunity to uniquely connect with our community, where readers can become familiar with a specific writer’s tone, writing style, and thoughts. However a columnist chooses to arrange their column, they can enjoy an outsized impact on our community through their sustained engagement with the discursive space of the Review’s audience.
Amidst increasing political turmoil and larger socioeconomic strife, it is becoming exponentially more important to uplift as many voices as possible to preserve our community’s strength and unity. The Opinions section serves as the principle megaphone that the community itself can utilize to challenge our own editorial board’s decisions and beliefs, and communicate with the rest of the Oberlin community.
We encourage those interested in increasing their prowess as a writer and communicator, sharing their unique perspectives to others through productive discussions, and contributing to the maintenance of a vital discursive community to take advantage of this opportunity! For those interested in being a columnist, applications are now open, and the deadline is Oct. 18. Interested applicants (and writers in general) should reach out to the Opinions Editors at [email protected]. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to send us an email or refer to our primer for writers and columnists.
