On Sunday, Feb. 8, the Seattle Seahawks took on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60, a rematch of the infamous 2015 Super Bowl 49. This year’s outcome, however, was quite different as Seattle dominated New England throughout the whole game, defeating them by a final score of 29–13. 

The game was relatively boring for most football fans, with a 12–0 score after three quarters of play that saw no touchdowns. An action-packed fourth quarter that saw 30 points scored was still underwhelming, as Seattle had practically clinched the game in the early fourth when a Sam Darnold touchdown pass to second-year tight end AJ Barner made the score 19–0. With New England’s offense looking completely outmatched by the Seahawks’ defense, the game was all but sealed. The Patriots were able to quickly score a touchdown, giving their fans a glimpse of hope, but that was promptly squandered on their next possession when Seahawks veteran linebacker Uchenna Nwosu picked off Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye and returned it for a touchdown, putting the Seahawks up by three scores, 29–7. New England followed up with a garbage-time touchdown in a futile attempt to mount a comeback, but that was as far as they would get before the confetti rained down, marking the Seattle Seahawks the champions of Super Bowl 60.

The highlight of this game was not Seahawks star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, as many would have thought. Instead, it was their incredible defense, carefully crafted by key draft picks and free agent pickups. Back in 2023, Seattle used their fifth overall pick to draft Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon. Regarded as slightly undersized, some viewed this as a reach, especially considering Seattle’s tendency to draft bigger corners like they did in the previous year when they landed 6’4” cornerback Riq Woolen in the fifth round out of UTSA, who contributed greatly to their stellar defense. Despite the doubters, Witherspoon made his presence felt immediately, as he has turned into one of the league’s top cornerbacks, and has been named to the Pro Bowl in all three seasons he has been in the NFL, as well as being named Second-Team All Pro this year. Witherspoon had a fantastic Super Bowl alongside other key players in the secondary like Seattle’s 2022 fourth-round pick Coby Bryant and 2023 free agent pickup Julian Love. 

The secondary was elite all night, with all the aforementioned players blanketing New England’s wide receivers for the majority of the night. The most impressive part of it all? That unit likely wasn’t even the best aspect of their defense that night. The real game wreckers came in the pass rush, giving Maye no time to process and causing him to have one of his worst performances in his first two years. Maye, this season’s MVP runner-up, was sacked six times, just one off of the Super Bowl record, and pressured a whopping 28 times. Strategic blitzes with Witherspoon from the secondary coupled with a defensive line that was already winning the battle in the trenches made Maye’s job nearly impossible. Defensive lineman Byron Murphy II and Derick Hall, a pair of first and second rounders from the 2024 and 2023 drafts, respectively, had big nights  combined for a total of four sacks. Rookie sensation Nick Emmanwori was another star for Seattle and ended the night with five tackles while constantly disrupting plays and contributing to Seattle’s defensive success. Emmanwori, a second round pick last year, has proven to be the steal of the draft as his versatility is just what this Seattle defense needed. He can play linebacker and deliver hits or you can leave him in coverage at nickel, corner, or safety. This allows him to make valuable plays for the Seahawks and makes it impossible to make a game plan against him. 

Although the defense shone, Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III took home the MVP hardware after his 161 yards from scrimmage and multiple breakout runs helped Seattle ignite their offense. While it wasn’t the most exciting Super Bowl to watch, it is hard not to appreciate the defensive masterclass put on by the Seattle Seahawks, giving many fans flashbacks to the legendary “Legion of Boom” of the early 2010s Seahawks teams. Now Seattle faces the next challenge: defending their title in 2027.
