In Hard Times, Moments of Celebration Must Be Tasteful

Watching the fireworks go off over the athletic fields Saturday night was a bit like listening to the band play aboard the sinking Titanic. The extravagant display marked the end of Homecoming Weekend, but also seemed to signify a larger dissonance for an institution currently grappling with existential questions about financial stability, how to treat community members with fairness and respect, and more.  The reality is that, in many ways, this is a difficult time for Oberlin. The College is staring down a $25 million dollar judgment resulting from a lawsuit filed by Gibson’s Bakery against the College and Vice President and Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo. Further, a structural budget deficit has already ...

Football Advances to 2–0

The Yeomen followed up a strong start to the season with a dominating 31–10 victory in their homecoming game against the Kenyon College Lords. Oberlin now commands their first 2–0 start since 1989 following the defeat of their rivals. While their previous 24–6 win over the Kalamazoo College Hornets broke their 13-game losing streak that spanned over two seasons, this win solidly indicates a transformed Yeomen team. “We had a mission at the beginning of the season,” new offensive coordinator...

Yeomen Triumphant in Historic Homecoming

October 9, 2015

A bitter, rain-soaked October atmosphere could not slow the offensive barrage that the Oberlin College football team brought to the Knowlton Athletics Complex this past Saturday when the Yeomen skinned the Allegheny College Gators 48–9. The Yeomen signed themselves into the school record books, landing with a score of historical statistical highs in the game. At a small school, it is obvious when there are new faces on campus. If you happened to walk by the athletics facilities this past weekend, you would have seen dozens of people walking around in their old Oberlin College athletics gear, greeting old friends, meeting new athletics staff and looking at plans for the new athletics facility. All of these people returned to campus for the jam-packed Oberlin Athletics Homecoming Weekend. Every year, the Heisman Club Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony kicks off the Homecoming festivities on Friday night. Athletics administration, alumni, coaches and captains are invited to the ceremony. Women’s soccer captain and senior Sarah Andrews said she enjoyed the experience. “It...
