Oberlin’s track and field teams saw plenty of action last weekend with both the Yeomen and Yeowomen competing in two different meets on Friday and Saturday. Only select members of the team were in action on Friday, with senior Geno Arthur running at the 50th Annual Hillsdale College “GINA” relays and the rest of the athletes competing at the Ashland University Alumni Open at Ashland University. Arthur stole the show in the GINA relay’s 5,000-meter run, beating his previous school record...

Ouch, That Stings! The women’s basketball team earned a tough victory Nov. 24 over the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets, ranked 25th in the nation, led for most of the contest, and when their lead extended to 10 points in the middle of the third quarter, it looked like the visitors might depart Philips gym with a win. Down by three with a little over a minute to play, junior forward Eleanor Van Buren knocked down a game-tying shot from beyond the arc, leveling the score at 61–61 and sending Philips gym into a frenzy. The Yeowomen then went on to get a crucial defensive stop, and senior captain Lindsey Bernhardt hoisted up a layup in traffic for the go-ahead bucket. The Yeowomen are cu...

You are both first-years playing a varsity sport in college for the first time. Has this always been an aspiration of yours, or did you decide to join track after arriving at Oberlin? The track and field team opened its season at the Kent State Golden Gala last Saturday in record-breaking fashion. First-year Monique Newton set a new school record in the women’s shot put with a 13.93-meter throw on her second attempt. The throw earned her third place in the competition, the highest among all first-years. In addition to setting the school record, Newton was also named the North Coast Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week and is currently the Division III national leader in the shot put. Needless to say, Head Track and Field Coach Ray Appenheimer was impressed with the strong showing. “I can say easily that was the single best freshman performance we’ve ever had at Oberlin Co...
