Margaritas on the rocks at Lupitas Mexican Restaurant during their Marg Night special.

Margarita Nights: An Old Student Tradition Meets a New Location

March 13, 2020

Editor’s Note: All students quoted in this article are of legal drinking age. Do you prefer your margaritas frozen or on the rocks? Is your favorite flavor the original lime, or an option like peach, watermelon, or mango? These are the questions I asked the crowded tables at Lupitas Mexican Restaurant, a downtown Oberlin joint known for its lacquered booth murals, reasonably priced enchilada platters, and, most of all, Marg Night. A staple among College students, Marg Nights are every Tuesday ...

Students, faculty, alumni, and United Automobile Workers members gathered to protest the College’s Feb. 18 announcement that it is “formally considering” outsourcing union labor.

Pressure Mounts Against Outsourcing Proposal; Senator Sherrod Brown Voices Support of UAW

March 6, 2020

Campus controversy continues to swirl around President Carmen Twillie Ambar’s Feb. 18 announcement that the College is “formally considering” outsourcing dining and custodial services, a proposal that could impact jobs currently held by 108 members of the United Automobile Workers union. While students and alumni have made their dissatisfaction with the proposal known, regional politicians and media have also begun to take notice — most notably Senator Sherrod Brown (D–OH), who circulated ...

Students eat DeCafe meals in Rathskeller. Previously, Rathskeller was home to Oberlin’s Fourth Meal. Now, Fourth Meal is only available as premade to-go food purchased at DeCafe.

Fourth Meal Changes Greeted By Student Pushback

February 14, 2020

As of this semester, Fourth Meal — previously served buffet-style in the Rathskeller — is now being served in DeCafé in to-go boxes. Students can now purchase Fourth Meal the same way as all DeCafé meals: by choosing one entree, two sides, and a drink packaged in plastic containers. Many students have witnessed significant changes to the location and structure of Fourth Meal during their time at Oberlin and some have expressed disappointment at these changes. “It’s horrible,” said Joshua Rho...

Student Dining Innovations Improve Social Atmosphere

November 22, 2019

Last week, a waiter sat College fourth-year Monica Dix and I at a corner table at Stevenson Dining Hall. That waiter was College fourth-year Jody Shanabrook, the founder and sole waitstaff of the Stevie Dinner Date Service, a pop-up restaurant-style dining experience available for a $5 service fee. For another $5, our dinner could have been accompanied by College fourth-year Riley Calcagno’s live violin music. “We’ve had five bookings over the past two weeks, but our business has been exploding...

CDS Welcomes Feedback to Enact Dining Changes

Pearse Anderson, Contributing Writer

November 16, 2018

This semester has seen a whirlwind of dining changes at Oberlin, including the reopening of Sky Bar’s lunch (and now pilot breakfast) service, the expansion of hours at Stevenson Dining Hall, and the reorganizing and downsizing of Fourth Meal into its original Rathskeller location, to name a few. These changes are a lot for dining administrators to understand, much less Oberlin students already tackling a full workload and rich extracurriculars. To combat the confusion, two new systems of student-administration communication have been developed for the community to learn about dining changes, while also reporting back what isn’t working in practice. The first way is though the Dining Ambassador program, a group...

Oberlin Remembers Hate Crime Victims

November 9, 2018

Students gathered in Peters Hall last Friday to honor those targeted by recent racist, anti-Semitic, and xenophobic attacks, including the shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue and Kroger grocery store, among other events. Rabbi Shlomo Elkan (center) spoke on the events and their impact. Students, including event organizers and College juniors Ezra Andres-Tysch and Leo Hochberg, hold candles to the left and right of Elkan. Event organizers not featured are College seniors Imke Hart, Chloe Falkenheim,...
