Oberlin Athletics Organizes Pride Month 5K
Last Saturday, Oberlin’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee organized their 2021 Pride Month 5K to celebrate and empower the LGBTQ+ community. With a $10 registration fee, they were able to raise a little under $500, with all the proceeds donated to The Trevor Project.
The Trevor Project is an organization created in 1998 which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth.
Both students and Oberlin locals were welcome to join and encouraged to walk or run the route around Oberlin’s campus — boasting pride colors — or participate virtually by sending in their times. The event began in Tappan Square and ended on Bailey Field.
Head Coach of the women’s volleyball team and SAAC advisor, Erica Rau, said that the group doubled their monetary goal compared to their last 5K and will be able to make a significant donation to The Trevor Project.
“This was an incredible opportunity for everyone in Oberlin to come together to support the LGBTQ+ community,” she said. “I am so proud of SAAC for making this event happen.”
