Although the weather might be cold and gloomy, summer is on the horizon. And with warm weather and sunny days come new trends. Coming on the coattails of Brat Summer, summer 2025 has a big shoe — or Steve Madden biker boot — to fill. Obies are eager to think of the warm days ahead, when they’ll be lying on the beach instead of in a womb chair. But what do they think will be trending?
Anna Roadman, College second-year:
The blues, definitely in. Also, flip-flops. Also, barbeque for your birthday. Hairy legs are in, I’m telling you right now. Hair wherever you want.
Tessa Korver, College second-year:
A big emphasis on artisanal cheeses, especially with picnics in the summer, bringing your own cheese to the picnic is really important. Also, bird watching. I think that bird watching needs to make a comeback. Fashion-wise, I am thinking with the recession they say that higher heels are more in fashion. So I think stilettos, particularly red bottoms, are going to be in style. And a shift toward toes out.
Danika Howard, College second-year:
Assless chaps.
Bee Herbstman, College second-year:
I think if they bring back sequins, I’d be really, really excited. I have a lot of sequins I just haven’t whipped out because I can’t figure out what to wear them to. Bring back sequins. Please. I’m hoping more people get mustaches on their pointer finger. Bring back twee.
Nila Grkinich-Myers, College second-year:
What I think will be in is Chevron. Not the pattern, but the gas station. Specifically Chevron with Techron, which is a patented fuel additive that helps clean and maintain engine parts. I think Techron has been slept on until now. I mention it to people and they always don’t know what it is. … I love Chevron with Techron too much that it would be a financial burden if I could drive because I would go to Chevron with Techron every day and get Chevron with Techron every day and it would ruin my bank account.
Jayden Tarr, College third-year:
This summer’s trend is going to be More Chaos by Ken Carson. His album is dropping this Friday.
Eloise Rich, College third-year:
My summer trend prediction is plastic flip-flops, like the kind where you walk around and your feet get really dirty and then you have to go home and wash your feet in the bathtub. I think we’ve had too many tall boots. Last year was a summer of tall boots and personally, my feet felt disgusting every single day. … I’m just ready to be free.
Jacob Leavey, College third-year:
I predict that in for the summer is going to be legumes and rice. Out for the summer is going to be fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as eggs and other produce.
Emma Kosik, College third-year:
I think all the femmes are going to be dressing really butch, but in a way that’s really femme.
Tommy Berlack, College second-year:
Nude beaches.
Jeremiah Ince, College second-year:
My prediction is that we’re going to step away from the baggy clothes and veer more toward form-fitting stuff. But no jeans. It’s all shorts, like jorts, and polo tees.
Audie Wilson, College third-year:
I think what’s in for the summer is going to be the Great Lakes region of the country, for sure. I also think really, really large sunglasses. Like the largest sunglasses you can wear, like huge-on-your-face sunglasses.
Bram Belonsky-Stern, double-degree third-year:
I think we’re bringing back baby bonnets.
Bella Bloom, College third-year:
I think this summer’s trend is going to be an extension of coastal grandma. I also feel like gingham could come back. Overalls, but not short overalls, those are ugly. Also jorts always. Jorts are always a thing, but I think jorts are going to be intense this summer, as they are for me all the time.
From hairy legs to flip-flops to baby bonnets, Oberlin students are in for a summer full of innovative trends. Only time can tell if they will come to fruition.
