Letter to the Editors: OC Republicans and Libertarians Announce Events

Bradley Hantler

To the Editors:

Oberlin College Republicans and Libertarians look to end the year strong with increased political conversation around campus. The club is pleased to announce two prominent speakers on two hot-button issues this upcoming week. Monday, May 2, Matt Mayer, President of the Buckeye Institute, will be lecturing on the implications of Senate Bill 5 in Ohio. It will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the West Lecture Hall. This is a heavily important bill that is quite often discussed only with the use of rhetoric, but the facts and actual statistics seem to be left out in conversations around Oberlin.

Thursday, May 5, Mark Steyn will be lecturing on the topics of Islam and the current status of free speech across the globe. It will begin at 8 p.m. in the West Lecture Hall of the Science Center. Mr. Steyn, an international bestselling author, may be best known for his work as a leading Canadian human rights activist. In 2007, a complaint was filed with the Ontario Human Rights Commission against Steyn pertaining to an article he wrote discussing “human rights.” Following this complaint there was no hearing or trial, only a pronouncement of wrongdoing. Finally, after a year of agony, the charge was rescinded.

Proud to be a Yeoman, but even prouder to be an American,
