SAAC Highlights Mental Health Awareness During DIII Week Programming

Content Warning: This article contains mentions of suicide. When Evan Hansen, senior captain of the Wabash College football team, took his life on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, no one saw it coming. He had started for the Little Giants for nearly his entire collegiate career, and all of his teammates loved and admired him. However, Hansen was struggling behind the scenes — not unlike many student-athletes all over the country. His tragedy can hardly be seen as an isolated incident. Hans...

For National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Oberlin’s Female Athletes Share Their Stories

February 8, 2019

When Michigan State narrowly beat Ohio State in a highly-anticipated football game during my senior year of high school, my dad poked fun at what I thought was going to be my future school and told me I should look into his alma mater, Oberlin, instead. The football team might not be as fun to watch, he said, but the academics are better, and you’ll meet some of the most interesting and talented people in the world. “There’s no way in hell I’m going there,” I told him. I loved playing softball bu...

McClain organized the tournament last year after receiving input from her Barrows Hall residents that they wanted more events to bring people together and allow them to be active and have fun. Over 50 people attended this year’s event. College junior and Quidditch team member Haley Gee said she appr...

SAAC to Connect Across the Divide

Hannah Rasmussen

Sitting down to a full room, I took a deep breath and welcomed faces old and new to the first Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meeting of the year. I was pleased to see so many student-athletes in one room, ready to listen, share ideas, and create a community. According to its website, SAAC is a national organization with a mission “to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image.” SAAC is the main athletics-focused student organization on Oberlin’s campus. I have attended the group’s monthly meetings since the beginning of my sophomore year. I can remember how my first filled me with a...

Local Ballot Measures Shape Student Lives

Hannah Rasmussen, Contributing Writer

As Nov. 8 approaches, all eyes are on the presidential race. Almost every student on campus has been hounded by the questions: “Are you registered to vote?” and “Have you changed your address?” from eager activists. These questions are important because, as most people know, Ohio is a swing state and will play a crucial role in deciding our next president. Everyone says that “Your vote here matters,” and I couldn’t agree more. However, your vote matters on more than just the national level — local issues are also important in shaping the lives of students and community members. I’ve lived in Oberlin since I was 2 years old, my childhood home is a 10-minute walk from campus, I am a graduate of the Ob...

Yeowomen Can’t Dodge Arrows in Weekend Sweep

March 11, 2016

The softball team stepped up to the plate Wednesday to take on the Ursuline College Arrows in Pepper Pike, Ohio. After two weeks of rest and preparation since their last game, the Yeowomen took the field to try to earn their first win of the season. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Arrows took an early 3–0 lead in the first inning. Ursuline would add another three runs in the fourth inning to put Oberlin down 6–0. The Yeowomen would not go down quietly, however, making a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a two-run homerun from junior pitcher and outfielder Tori Poplaski. Despite this, the Yeowomen were unable to continue their run, ultimately losing game one 6–2. Poplaski said...
