When College senior and women’s basketball co-captain Olivia Canning watched her teammate, College junior and point guard Cheyenne Arthur, nail a few three-pointers in last Saturday’s game against Alma College, she got the feeling that the young team was headed toward another successful season. The Yeowomen, who opened their 2018–2019 season Nov. 10 with a 59–45 win, are approaching the season with both steady optimism and caution. The team is aiming to repeat last year’s NCAC championship, which it took home for the first time in program history, but must confront the challenging experience disparity faced by this year’s younger squad. Teams thrive on consistency; between the 2016–2017 and 2...

Changing Narratives in Women’s Basketball

Changing Narratives in Women’s Basketball

When I first stepped on Oberlin’s campus as a first-year last fall, I could feel the buzz of political activity. It was overwhelming yet thrilling to be a part of a group of students poised to change our social landscape. What I soon realized was that there are sections of Oberlin that are dogmatic in their liberal ideology. It is a dogmatism that forces political homogeneity without room for mistake or disagreement. This is fundamentally not what Oberlin stands for. As an institution with a deep ...

All three have contributed extensively to the team’s success throughout their four years. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. This was the most successful season for any women’s basketball team in school history. What made you so successful, aside from the obvious...

The women’s basketball team advanced to the North Coast Athletic Conference semifinals for the second year in a row Tuesday, marking their recent and sustained success and giving Head Coach Kerry Jenkins his 100th win with the program. The women’s basketball team triumphed over the Denison University Big Red in the NCAC’s quarterfinal game 66–52 on the home court in front of a large crowd of fired-up fans. “I would say the feeling I’m having is not predicated on [the win],” Jenkins said. ...

Perspective: Coordination, Teamwork Lead to Third Conference Win

Wednesday night marked the third conference game for the women’s basketball team, who faced off against the Denison University Big Red. Starting out conference play 2–0, we hoped to continue our winning streak and defend our home court. Coming into the game, we knew we had to rebound the ball well and execute and defend the three-point line. The first quarter started off with uncharacteristically sloppy play. On the offensive end, we were able to keep up with Denison but failed to rebound e...

Yeowomen Best Big Red to Stay Undefeated in NCAC

Losing four of its first five games hasn’t stopped the women’s basketball team from dominating North Coast Athletic Conference play. With a 51–46 win against the Denison University Big Red Wednesday, Oberlin improved to 3–4 overall, and a perfect 3–0 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen, who currently sit atop the NCAC standings in a tie with DePauw University, have kept their game style simple. “We’re not a complicated team at all,” Head Coach Kerry Jenkins said. “We execute, we play...

Yeowomen Fall in Season Opener to Baldwin Wallace

Yeowomen Fall in Season Opener to Baldwin Wallace

November 18, 2016

Women’s basketball endured a tough loss in its season opener, falling 70–41 to the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets Tuesday. This disappointing start was somewhat of a letdown after the Yeowomen’s highest preseason ranking ever, sitting at fourth place in the North Coast Athletic Conference coaches’ poll. The squad was particularly disappointed in the loss given that Oberlin earned a tight win last year over Baldwin Wallace, squeezing by at 63–61 in one of the “closest matche...

The women’s basketball team saw its record-breaking season come to an end last Tuesday when the Yeowomen fell to the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops by a score of 75–58. A raucous crowd of 456 was in attendance to witness the Yeowomen’s first home playoff game since 1990. The Yeowomen hung tough with the Battling Bishops for over half the game, as junior Lindsey Bernhardt tied the game at 39 points with 17:53 to go in the second half with a three-pointer. It was all Bis...

The women’s basketball team added to its record-breaking season last Saturday when it came from behind to beat the visiting Hiram College Terriers 76–72 in overtime. The win pushed the team’s overall record to 14–9 and its North Coast Athletic Conference record to 10–4, making it their best NCAC record ever. The Yeowomen began the game slowly, trailing by five at halftime, but they rode a 17-point second half by senior forward Christina Marquette to tie the game and eventually win in ...
