Security Report: Feb. 1 – Feb. 5, 2013

Friday, Feb. 1

5:45 a.m. Security officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Service Building. The area was checked, but no fire was found. The alarm was reset, and a work order was filed to check the alarm.

Saturday, Feb. 2

10:39 p.m. Officers responded to a report of vandalism in the first-floor lobby of Firelands Apartments. Upon arrival, officers found overturned furniture and red paint that had been thrown across the tiled floor. While in the building, officers heard loud music coming out of a first-floor apartment. Several underage students in the apartment were found to be consuming alcohol. Attendees were advised to leave, and the music was turned down.

Sunday, Feb. 3

1:21 a.m. Officers were requested to check a dorm room on the first floor of East Hall after the odor of marijuana was reported to be coming from the room. Occupants denied smoking in the room, although smoke was visible and a strong odor consisent with burnt marijuana was detected. All occupants were advised of the smoking policy.

Monday, Feb. 4

2:36 a.m. An officer on patrol in East Hall found that a handrail had been removed from the first floor stairwell of the Mahan Wing. The officer checked the interior of the building for the handrail, but it was not located.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

1:19 a.m. An officer on patrol observed a male individual who appeared to be intoxicated attempting to enter the Service Building and Mudd library. Members of the Oberlin Police Department responded, and the individ- ual was taken into custody.

4:03 a.m. Security officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Service Building. A small amount of smoke and a burnt odor were detected. The building was checked, and the cause was determined to be dust in the heating duct. An HVAC technician responded to check the heating system.

8:48 a.m. A member of the custodial staff reported two lounge chairs missing from the first-floor lounge of Burton Hall. The chairs are brown and blue patterned with wood trim and have an unknown value.

2:20 p.m. A staff member reported the theft of a laptop from Oberlin Hillel sometime in September of 2011. A description of the laptop and its value are unknown at the time of this report. The theft is under investigation.

6:18 p.m. A student reported the theft of her locked bicycle from one of the bike racks north of Fairchild Hall. The bicycle is a gray 21-speed men’s Raleigh bike. It has one brake broken, a front light and is valued at approximately $500.

6:40 p.m. An officer on patrol detected a strong odor consistent with burnt marijuana on the first floor of East Hall. The officer and RA made contact with the occupants of the room in question, and they denied smoking in the room.
