Security Report: Oct. 4 – Oct. 10, 2012

Thursday, Oct. 4

12:41 a.m. An officer on patrol at Hales Gym observed that the interior door of the Art Studio was open. The officer checked the surrounding area and locked the door.

1:30 a.m. Officers responded to a Firelands apartment to assist with an ill, unresponsive student. Upon arrival they found that the student had already been taken to Mercy Allen Hospital for treatment.

7:34 a.m. A staff member reported the theft of the hood emblem from his vehicle while parked in Kettering lot. The theft occurred sometime between 10:45 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 4. The value of the emblem is unknown.

12:30 p.m. An Art student reported a mannequin torso, batteries and an American flag missing from her studio space in Hales Gym.

5:37 p.m. A student reported the theft of her unlocked bicycle from outside Langston Hall. The bike is a bright pink Huffy mountain bike with a somewhat rectangular, heavily padded seat.

7:15 p.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to an activated carbon monoxide detector at an Elmwood apartment. The cause was found to be a low battery and the battery was changed.

Friday, Oct. 5

12:01 a.m. A student reported the possible theft of her iPhone from Dascomb Dining Hall. The iPhone 4S is white in color and valued at approximately $400. Follow-up is currently being conducted.

7:13 p.m. A student reported her blue Magna Oasis bicycle missing from outside Rice Hall. The bicycle is valued at approximately $50 and was locked to itself at the time of theft.

11:58 p.m. Officers were requested to assist a student who was ill from alcohol consumption at Price House. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Hospital for treatment.

Saturday, Oct. 6

12:11 a.m. A student reported being involved in a minor car accident. The driver of a shuttle on Elm Street drove too close to a parked vehicle and struck its passenger door. The damage reported was minor and no one was injured. 12:29 a.m. Safety and Security officers and Oberlin Police officers responded to a report of students being harassed in Tappan Square. A check of the area was conducted but no one could be found.

12:45 a.m. Officers were requested to assist an intoxicated student in Price House. The student was transported to Mercy Allen Hospital for treatment.

1 a.m. A Resident Assistant reported two males on the first floor of Barrows Hall with a bottle of vodka. When asked for the bottle, the individuals ran. Officers were able to locate one of the individuals, who was identified as a student. Because the individuals were underage, the vodka was confiscated and disposed of.

1:51 a.m. A resident of South Hall reported a loud commotion in the dorm. Officers responded and found the ping-pong table broken and several chairs turned upside down. It is unknown who was responsible.

2:58 a.m. A student reported that a vending machine had been broken into in East Hall. The glass was shattered and contents of the machine were missing. The vending company was contacted and notified. A custodian responded to clean the glass up.

7:58 a.m. A staff member reported that an athletic van from another school ran over a wooden post in the drive that leads up to the Philips Gym parking lot. Follow-up is currently being conducted.

9:54 a.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the second floor of Allencroft House. Excessive steam from a radiator activated the alarm. Maintenance responded for repairs.

4:05 p.m. Officers responded to a report of an alarm on the second floor of Langston Hall. A room smoke detector was found in alert and an odor of burnt marijuana was detected in the room. The alarm was reset with no problem. The occupant of the room was not present.

7:16 p.m. A student reported the theft of her women’s 21-speed bike with a multicolored, hand-painted frame from the south side bike racks at Carnegie Hall. The bicycle was locked to the rack at the time of theft.

Sunday, Oct. 7

12:05 a.m. Officers responded to a noise complaint at a Goldsmith apartment. An unauthorized party was underway. Officers informed the attendees that they should leave, and they complied.

3:25 a.m. Officers responded to a possible party at a second Goldsmith apartment. No party was found but the occupant was playing loud music. He was advised to turn the music off and complied.

10:45 a.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Allencroft House. Excessive steam from the radiator had activated the alarm. A maintenance technician responded to repair the radiator.

12:09 p.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a Union Street apartment. Steam from a hot shower activated the alarm. The alarm was reset.

4:52 p.m. A student reported the theft of his unlocked bicycle from the northwest bike racks at East Hall. The bike is a men’s three-speed, green Huffy and is valued at approximately $20.

Monday, Oct. 8

5:30 p.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a Union Street apartment. Smoke from burnt popcorn activated the alarm. The apartment was cleared of smoke, and the alarm was reset.

8:38 p.m. A student reported that while riding his bike on Woodland Street, a dark-colored vehicle with two male occupants drove up next to him and threw a bottle at him. Officers responded to the area, but were not able to locate the vehicle in question.

Tuesday, Oct. 9

7:10 p.m. Officers and members of the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a Union Street apartment. The alarm was activated by steam from a hot shower. It was reset.

Wednesday, Oct. 10

12:52 a.m. A student notified Safety and Security that there was a large white dog loose on Cedar Street. The complaint was referred to Oberlin Police Department.
