The sidewalks are covered in fallen leaves, and it’s getting dark at 5 p.m. The last few weeks of the semester are just around the bend. As Oberlin students prepare for the final break of the semester, the Opinions Editors ask one important question:
How do Obies feel about the length of Thanksgiving break?
Maddie Schaefer, Conservatory first-year
I don’t really care. I think it’s fine as it is. I mean, it’d be nice if it was longer, if nothing else, to just not have class. But my family never does anything for Thanksgiving, so even if it was longer, I wouldn’t be going home for Thanksgiving.
Akilah Villers-Jean, College first-year
I feel like it’s kind of short especially if you have to fly or something. It’s kind of expensive just to go home for three days.
Delphina Engelstein, College first-year
I feel like it’s a little short. I live in New York City and having to pay for expensive flights that are within a short period of time is not super ideal. Also since we had a break pretty recently, that was longer, it seems sort of weird timing.
Lily Clark, Conservatory second year
I think it’s too short because it’s only four days. It’s really short. Then professors end up canceling class on Wednesdays anyway. I think it should be a week, especially given how tired I am at the moment.
Robert Taylor, College fourth-year
I mean, it’s technically a break. I’m gonna be flying home on Thanksgiving, which will be interesting and will mean I won’t get to spend as much time with my family. But honestly I’m just glad there is a break because I plan on using it as an excuse to do homework assignments without having to worry about going to classes.
Abby Harris Crowne, College fourth-year
I’m very glad we do have the break because for me, Thanksgiving is a holiday for family. But with the approximate 12 hours of transit in both directions, the length of the break does not allow me to fly home.
