The track and field team opened its season at the Kent State Golden Gala last Saturday in record-breaking fashion. First-year Monique Newton set a new school record in the women’s shot put with a 13.93-meter throw on her second attempt. The throw earned her third place in the competition, the highest among all first-years. In addition to setting the school record, Newton was also named the North Coast Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week and is currently the Division III national leader in the shot put. Last weekend, Oberlin hosted the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Conference Championships.The men’s team finished fourth in the competition, while the Yeowomen placed second for the sixth year in the row. The Oberlin College track and field teams lit up the track this weekend during the annual Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted at Oberlin, on Saturday. Instead of the usual NCAC opponents, this weekend the Yeomen competed with nationally ranked and Division II schools. The Yeowomen powered through to place third out of six teams with 121 points, while the Yeomen came in fourth out of five teams with a total of 134.83 points. The field events started off the meet, and de spite the adverse weather conditions, both squads excelled in their respective events. This past weekend Oberlin’s track and field teams finished their 2013–2014 indoor season in stride at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Denison University. The Yeomen took home fifth place with 47 points, and the Yeowomen garnered 98 points to secure third place. For the Yeomen there was a battle for places four through seven, with Wittenberg University just sliding by the Oberlin with 49 points for fourth place. The overall meet winners were Wabash College on the men’s side with 256 points, and Ohio Wesleyan University for the women with 193.5 points.
