Last Saturday the Yeomen soccer team earned an impressive 3–2 overtime win against North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wabash College. Senior forward Ed Vitoria and first-year forward John Ingham scored in the 43rd and 67th minutes respectively. Senior midfielder Matt Capozzi scored the overtime winner in the 94th minute. It was a crucial win in Oberlin’s first conference game, giving the team three points in the conference standings.

The Yeomen carried the momentum from the big win to rainy New Concord, Ohio, where they played Muskingum University in their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday. It was a physical game, with 29 total fouls and three yellow cards. Oberlin had a slight edge in shots throughout regulation time, but they were unable to deliver with a goal.

Early in the 60th minute Muskingum delivered a cross that was deflected several times as the defense tried to get it out of the box. The jumble pulled junior keeper Brandt Rentel off his line, and Muskingum was able to force a shot, only to be saved on the goal line by sophomore defender Enzo Cabili. As regular time wound down, sophomore defender Josh Wilkerson delivered a shot just wide, and the game moved into overtime.

The Yeomen went on to dominate the overtime periods, with 11 shots in just 20 minutes of play, but again they were unable to push one across. Rentel had four saves and now has a streak of 152 minutes without allowing a goal. The Yeomen outshot Muskingum 23 to 11 overall, but just five of the 23 were on goal. The very wet conditions could have contributed to the lack of accuracy. The long game ended with a 0–0 tie.

Wednesday’s game leaves Oberlin’s non-conference record at 5–2–1 and 6–2–1 overall. The team will take on NCAC opponent Wittenberg University this Saturday night at home.
