A Strong Year for Admissions Despite Uncertainty

Despite the challenges that universities around the country have faced regarding depressed enrollment levels for incoming classes, Oberlin has had a successful year recruiting and enrolling new students.  The beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. aligned closely with the timing of admissions decisions for high school seniors. Around the country, some College administrators began to worry that they wouldn’t meet their commitment goals. The night before Così fan tutte was scheduled to open this past Wednesday, the entire cast, crew, orchestra, creative team, and every voice faculty member gathered on the stage of Hall Auditorium as Dean of the Conservatory William Quillen officially announced that the opera would be closed to the general public. The show must go on — even if the audience is banned from attending. Aside from the two tickets that every cast member is allowed to give friends and family, Hall Auditorium will be empty as the show is performed. Arabic Courses to Be Offered Digitally

Oberlin will change the way students take Arabic language classes starting next academic year. Moving forward, students will take intermediate- and upper-level Arabic courses through the Shared Languages Program, an initiative of the Great Lakes College Association. The courses will be taught in a “digital classroom” with live group video sessions led by Hanada Al-Masri, associate professor of Arabic at Denison University. The Shared Languages Program is available to all 13 colleges and universities in the GLCA, including Oberlin.
